The Dept. of Theatre was formed in 1942. Prior to 1942 courses in theater were taught in the Dept. of Spoken English and theater productions were mounted by various academic departments and student groups. The department was known as the Dept. of Theatre and Speech, 1961-1976 and included dance courses. In 1976 the department resumed the name Dept. of Theatre. Since 1900, Christmas at Smith College has involved the sending of cards, the singing of carols and the annual Vespers.
